Bring Your Own Device
We are a BYOD School.
So, if your child has a device of their own at home, we encourage you to let them bring it to and from school each day, for their exclusive use in their classroom.
If they do not have a device at home, but you are thinking about getting them one, we’d encourage you to do so and to let them bring it to and from school each day.
If money is a barrier
We understand that WINZ/MSD offers financing for families on lower incomes. In order to access this, we believe you do not need to be a WINZ client and that as part of this finance, no interest is charged. More information about this offer can be found here, or at https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/eligibility/children/school-costs.html
Why we think technology will support your child’s learning at school and at home
Technology and devices support learners to engage, progress and achieve in 21st Century learning environments.
Digital tools
help overcome barriers of distance and time
capture and engage student interest and motivation
provide new and different ways of learning
provide access to resources that cater for individual, cultural or developmental differences
enhance opportunities to further develop children’s learning journeys
Digital technologies are used by our learners to
access knowledge
bring the ‘outside world’ into the classroom
participate in virtual learning opportunities
collaborate with others
create digital records of their learning to share
Te Kāpehu Riccarton School strives to provide equitable access to devices. Devices owned by the school are distributed across teams and classes according to a ratio, based on the number of learners divided by the number of devices available.
We will never be able to buy enough devices for every learner to have access at all times, so they will always have to share with 2 to 4 other learners, unless they are able to bring their own device. Every device a learner brings to school themselves, means fewer children having to share from amongst the devices the school can afford to supply.
Teams Kāpuka and Kahikatea manage classwork through Google Classroom. The students use their school Google accounts to access this learning platform, and can do so while at school, at home, during school hours, or even outside school hours. This makes this platform great during these current times.
All teachers check and monitor their learners’ online activity, ensuring safe online practices are followed.
Please check this link for information about Te Kāpehu Riccarton School’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) agreement (as per the accompanying information).
Thinking of Purchasing a Device?
We use two main types of devices; iPads (in Team Patiti) and Chromebooks (Team Kāpuka and Kahikatea). At this point the school is providing some iPads needed for junior learners.
Recommended devices for learners in Teams Kāpuka and Kahikatea, should you wish to purchase one:
A Chromebook with at least:
4gb of RAM (for speed)
A 32gb SSD (for storage)
Intel processor - 4 core
an 11” display
A physical keyboard
all day battery life
Google Chrome browser installed (or Edge Chromium)
WiFi capability - networking standard WLAN 802.11ac
Chromebooks and iPads are available to purchase from many local retail stores including PB Tech, Harvey Norman and Noel Leemings. All of these retailers have packages and preferential pricing for schools and students so do tell them you are buying your device to use at Te Kāpehu Riccarton School. Please be aware that with the current COVID-19 epidemic, stock levels can be quite low and devices may need to be ordered into the country.
We have aligned our device recommendations with Riccarton High School and provided the device is looked after, it will be suitable for use at High School too.
Insurance:
Te Kāpehu Riccarton School takes no responsibility for damage to your child’s device while it is at school. We will take all effective precautions to ensure its safety but the responsibility of care lies with the student. If you are thinking of purchasing a new device from a local retail store, it is important that you consider some of the extended warranty / Insurance offers from retailers. Contents Insurance will normally cover these devices, but you would need to check this with your insurer.
What Whānau can do at Home to Make Devices Safer:
Linewize is a service which we use at school to ensure learners have a safe, seamless experience on their devices. They also offer recommendations for parents at home here, or at https://www.linewize.com/community
Concerns about Devices and your Child:
If you have any concerns about your child's device usage please don’t hesitate to reach out to NetSafe, at https://www.netsafe.org.nz/
They are an organisation that supports safe internet usage in Aotearoa.
