Dangerous Decibels

Whaea Judith —

Hearing Christchurch visited year 7/8 to share their Dangerous Decibel Presentation.

Dangerous Decibels aim is to educate children about the ear, hearing, decibels and how to prevent noise induced hearing loss.

Scientists are discovering that more and more young people between the ages of 7 and 18 are suffering from hearing loss caused by loud noise, or NIHL (noise induced hearing loss). This is entirely preventable and the internationally researched Dangerous Decibels programme is designed to help address this.

Our learners undertook many activities that taught them about the following areas:

  • What sound is

  • The anatomy of the ear and how we hear

  • How hearing is damaged

  • What it is like to have hearing loss

  • How loud is too loud?

  • How to protect your hearing

  • How to use ear plugs properly

Learners were shocked about what levels of noise are actually damaging our hearing.
