Inquiry - Waka Hourua (double-hulled waka)

Whaea Maria —

Space 9 learnt about Waka Hourua as part of their Inquiry work about Voyaging.

Waka hourua were designed to be fast. They were low and close to the sea for speed and had sails that could use the full power of the wind for fast travel.

Students worked together in groups to create their own waka hourua and tested them to see if they would float. They did!

A lot of manaaki was shown when working together and children showed manawa ora (enjoyment) for learning.
