Kahikatea Museum and Art Gallery Trip

Miss Johnson —

On Friday 6th April, Kahikatea went to the Museum and Art Gallery.

At the Art Gallery, learners toured the exhibition spaces and looked at a range of artworks featuring Māori motif and designs. They learned about common shapes and patterns and how they are used. In the Education Centre, students used what they had learned to design and paint their own pou, which tell the story of who you are.

In the Museum, learners looked at how the first people arrived from East Polynesia around 800 years ago, what challenges they faced and how they adapted to meet those challenges. With a focus on lifestyle and the early settlement of the South Island, learners developed an understanding of what life was like for Aotearoa’s first settlers.

All learners had an enjoyable time and learned a great deal.
