Te Koromiko Swannanoa School is a Decile 10 semi-rural full primary school situated in the Waimakariri district of the North Canterbury region catering for approximately 320 - 350 students from Year 1-8. We are located about 25km from central city Christchurch.
The school enjoys a warm, welcoming family atmosphere. Being set in a rural setting and surrounded by lifestyle blocks helps to define the school’s character. Parents appreciate the close caring way staff, students and community work together.
The staffing structure consists of a collaborative team approach where teachers coach, mentor and support each other to best meet the learning needs of their students. We have four hapu within out school named after native birds - Pakura (Hapū 1 – Years 0-2), Piwakawaka (Hapū 2 – Years 3-4), Karearea (Hapū 3 – Years 5-6) and Ruru (Hapū 4 – Years 7-8).
Ō tātou Taonga - Our Values
A Te Koromiko Swannanoa School Learner shows lifelong learning through fully embracing Ō tātou Taonga - our school values of Community (Pikorua), Success (Porowhita), Kindness (Koru), Respect (Roimata) and Integrity (Toki). At Te Koromiko Swannanoa School, we encourage all learners to be actively involved in our community, to always be the best they can be through following our five taonga (treasures).
Our Curriculum
At Te Koromiko Swannanoa School we have developed our very own curriculum. While it reflects the vision and principles of the New Zealand Curriculum, it more importantly reflects the values, hopes and aspirations which the staff, parents and students hold for the children in our community.
We are a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school, and base our programme around our taonga (values). For more information on PB4L, click here.
We have a strong focus on developing the whole child, especially through these values. Our students are encouraged to show community (Whakawhanaungatanga), Success (Ako), Respect (Kaitiakitanga), Kindness (Kotahitanga) and Integrity (Tikanga) every minute of every day.
Within each hapū, we have a team of highly skilled collaborative teachers who implement our philosophies of Teaching at the Point of Challenge, Predict and Prevent, Solution Focused, Calm Alert and Focussed, Name, Number Need and Rich and Responsive.
We are proud of being a semi-rural school and integrate rural values through our 'Seeds of Learning' programme. We design our curriculum using a 'Rich and Responsive' philosophy and we reach out to our community and proudly implement an inclusive atmosphere.
We offer a range of support programmes within classes for children with diverse needs. We have a team of dedicated learning support staff who work with individuals and small groups to provide support. Children with special abilities also have a range of activities to facilitate their learning.
The school has developed the 'Seeds of Learning' programme, which is integrated into the school curriculum. The purpose behind the Seeds of Learning is to better reflect our community within our school. Aspects of the Seeds of Learning include animal husbandry (growing, caring and exploring the purpose of having animals), horticulture (growing a fruit forest and expanding the edible gardens) and sustainability. The programme provides a greater understanding of empathy and a knowledge of rural life and rural values.
Our school is an active school with many opportunities to engage in sports, physical education, adventure based learning and education outside the classroom.
