Canterbury Cross Country Championships

Sporty Steve —

Josh Smith leads the way with a superb Silver Medal

Despite the effects of covid and illness affecting our school team for the South Zone Cross Country on the 25th May, we found ourselves with 7 qualifiers for the Canterbury Cross Country event on 22nd June.

This years event was held at Nga Puna Wai which created new challenges than previous events at Halswell Quarry.

Primary Sports Canterbury were aware of the impacts of covid in the build up to zones events and had decided to allow the chance for zones to nominate runners that had previously qualified for the event to have the opportunity of a wildcard into this event. Fortunately both Emi Yeakley and Emily Currie were recipients of these for the year 6 girls team, taking our total qualifiers up to 9.

On the day we did lose Darby Pfahlert due to illness, but the remaining 8 students put a huge amount of pride and effort into their representation of Te Kura o Huriawa Thorrington.

The team were led home by Josh Smith who led for a large proportion of the Year 5 Boys race before having to settle for a well deserved Silver Medal. As Josh put it after the race, he had nothing else left to give out on the course and performed to the highest standard he could.
