Primary Canterbury Athletics

Last wednesday Thorrington Primary had a team of 12 at the Primary Canterbury Athletics competition in Ashburton at the domain. It is a really big day with over 1000 schools and competitors. Our team did really well in each event we entered and all 12 put in every last bit of effort they had. Both Harry Simmons and Dylan Magill made it into the sprint finals and Atalia Crocker made it into the top 8 in high jump. Thank you to all the parents who came down to support. A special mention to Adrian Simmons and Sally Vossler for helping me transport children to Ashburton and putting up the gazebo.

Cricket

Our school had a strong and competitive cricket team this year. We had 3 pool matches, which we won 2 and lost 1. This qualified the team for cricket finals day which was held at Hagley park on Friday 8th December. Our team had a great day, they came 2nd in each match (team words), only by a couple of runs each time! A big thank you to Rebecca Whitehead for transporting, supervising and managing the team all day. It was very much appreciated. Thank you also to Rhys Julian and Katherine Denton for helping to transport the children back to school.

Team highlights of 2017

2017 has been a really great year for sport at Thorrington primary. I have enjoyed my year working with the children and getting to know them. One of my goals for the year was to get more children throughout the school more active and more involved in some teams sports.

  • We had 9 senior winter sports teams, 3 netball, 3 football, 2 hockey and 1 rugby. This was made possible by the senior teachers and parent volunteers coaching the teams throughout the season. Thank you Michelle Wallace, Pedro Denison and Andy Lemon for all your efforts. I’m looking forward to organising the senior sports teams for 2018

  • 4 miniball teams of year 3 and 4 students and 2 senior basketball teams played at Pioneer stadium throughout the year. This was a great competition with a beginner grade and an A/B grade. One of our teams were runners up for the ‘B’ grade at the end of term 4. Thank you to our parent coaches and managers for running these teams.

  • Junior year 3 and 4 netball was a big hit in the winter. I organised 4 teams through Cashmere netball club and every player seemed to really enjoy their season. They played 5 aside netball in ⅔ of the court. It meant that each player got more touches on the ball more often and was really involved in the game from one end of the court to the other. Thank you to the parent coaches and managers who made this possible.

  • Sharon Manson, Megan Denison and I registered 13 Thorrington teams in the term 4 touch competition at Centennial Park. This has been for year 0 - year 6 and I have been so impressed every week that I go to touch and see half of the school there! The children seem to really enjoy the game and I see plenty of smiling faces. I have watched a year 0 team Eagles improve so much throughout the season! Thank you again to all the coaches and managers for making this possible.

That’s all from me, have a great break and I’ll see you back next year. Keep an eye out for my notices with sport registrations. Helen Whitley, Sports Coordinator
