Message from the Principal

Juliana Rae - July 24, 2022

Welcome to Te Kura o Huriawa Thorrington. We are very proud to be able to share our school with you. Our gifted name Te Kura o Huriawa means the school at the bend in the river. This meaning provides us with a context for learning more about the waterways, the flora and fauna and the history of local iwi for whom this river had practical and cultural significance.

Our vision encapsulates our approach to learning:

"Ako tahi ai kia eke tahi ai tātou ki ngā taumata: Learning together to be the best we can be."

At Thorrington, we are committed to cultivating the 4Cs - Caring, Curious, Confident, Citizens - and nurturing competencies essential for success in our interconnected global society.

Central to our ethos is fostering a sense of belonging, where every child and their whānau feel their cultural contributions are valued and respected. We prioritize partnership, actively fostering collaboration among teachers, students, and parents.

Excellence and personal growth are cornerstones of our learning environment. We embrace collective achievement, supporting one another and celebrating success together. Our aim is to spark a lifelong passion for learning and encourage curiosity, empowering students to lead their educational journey.

We recognise the importance of foundational literacy and numeracy skills in navigating the world and expressing oneself effectively. Through explicit teaching, we equip students with essential skills for critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative expression.

At Thorrington, we foster a culture of continuous growth, empowering every student to become their own teacher. We understand the trust you place in us when you send your children here, and we are dedicated to ensuring their safety, happiness, and value within our school community through reflection, proactive measures, and genuine care.
