Canterbury Football Champions

Te Kura o Huriawa Thorrington take home the title as best year 5/6 school team in Canterbury

On Thursday 24th September our year 5/6 Football team represented the South Zone in the 2020 Primary Sports Canterbury Football Championships.

Having had a strong Winter Sports season the squad were confident of having a good tournament.

With the rules being different to normal, it was important that the team adapted to the rules for this quickly so as to not put themselves in a tough position.

The first game up against Elmwood saw the team start slowly but come back from a goal behind to equalise. In this situation though the important aspect then becomes how many corners the team has. With the very last kick of the game, we forced a corner which would mean on countback we won the game (this would prove to be important later on).

Following on we then defeated Burnside 3-0, Southbridge 3-2 and again won on corners against Redcliffs (having drawn 1-1).

These results saw us top the Black Pool and take on Westburn in the semi-final. A 2-1 victory put the team through to the final against a strong Somerfield team.

With a number of both teams knowing each other from club football this was always going to be a tight game. This proved to be the case as the score finished at 1-1, but once again we prevailed on corners (2 to 1) to take home the championship.

A huge well done to the squad: Lucy Derry, Will Denison, Fin Pullin, Sebastian Wong, Lukas Hassett, James Seaman, James Henshaw and Zac Manson.

A big thank you also to Pedro Denison who coached the team during the Winter Sports season and assisted with the management on the day.
