Social Skills - Tolerance

Alison Flint —

The current focus for our Social Skills programme is Tolerance.

Why encourage tolerance in our children?

The society we live in is an increasingly diverse society. Teaching tolerance is important because people who learn to be open to differences will have more opportunities in life. Success in today’s world depends on being able to understand, appreciate and work with others.

Tolerance is not about accepting bad behaviour but accepting people for who they are and treating others the way that you would like to be treated. It is about having a respect for differences and valuing these. Teaching tolerance is also the foundation of effective anti-bullying programmes.

We can teach our children by example and provide them with opportunities to play and work with others. Here are some ideas for how to help our children to become tolerant of others:

▪ Make sure that as adults we treat and speak to others with respect.

▪ Children learn from us so think carefully about what your children hear you say. Your children may repeat what they have heard.

▪ Choose books, movies, games and programmes carefully. They have a powerful effect on shaping attitudes.

▪ Expect your children to treat others with respect.

▪ Acknowledge and value the differences in your own family. Help your children feel valued for who they are.

▪ Foster self-esteem. Children who feel good about themselves will be more respectful to others.

▪ Teach your own family traditions to your children. This will encourage pride about where you belong and what you have to offer.

Remember – model the behaviour you want to see from your own children.

Kind regards
