Robbie Fruean Shield

Chris Robinson —

Our Year 5 and 6 rugby team, Papakōwhai Lightning, had loads of fun last week at the Robbie Fruean Shield at Onepoto Park.

The weather was unfortunately wet and cold, but the rugby was good!

We played 4 games:

Game 1: Our first game was against Windley School. They were a tough team but we had an awesome win. Player of the game: Niko Grant

Game 2: By the second game we had started to warm up a bit and had another really good win against Ngati Toa School. Player of the game: Monique Hawkins

Game 3: Our third game was by far our toughest, but we played really well against Titahi Bay School, who went on the win the tournament. We were the only school to score any tries against them! Player of the game: Mason O'Sullivan

Game 4: Our last game was when were were feeling our coldest, but we still played well in a tight battle with Maraeroa school, which ended in a draw! Player of the game: George Everett

Each team had a best and fairest player chosen for the tournament. This player was chosen for playing hard but fair, scoring some awesome tries, and doing it all while having a smile on his face and being humble.

Best and Fairest for the tournament: Jaxon Stroud!

As you can see from the photo, we also had a visit from a few All Blacks at half time which was really exciting. We think that maybe they got too cold though because they didn't play so well on Saturday night.

Thanks to:

  • Mrs Bunton for all of the organising she did to get us ready

  • Our families for transporting and supporting us

  • Titahi Bay School and the WRFU for organising an awesome tournament
