Let’s refer to Fidgets as Fidget Tools!

LSC —

Why is my friend allowed a fidget in class and I’m not?

Fidget tools, often dismissed as mere distractions, actually offer a valuable outlet for excess energy and can significantly enhance focus and concentration for ākonga:

  1. By providing a physical anchor for restless hands, these tools can free up cognitive resources, allowing for better information processing during tasks that require sustained attention, such as mat time, reading and math group sessions or Celebration of Learning.

  2. The repetitive motions can be surprisingly calming, helping to reduce anxiety and stress levels, and creating a sense of grounding in potentially overwhelming situations.

Furthermore, fidget tools aren't limited to those with diagnosed conditions like ADHD or anxiety; they can be beneficial for anyone who experiences moments of restlessness or difficulty concentrating. The key lies in finding a tool that is subtle and non-disruptive, allowing the user to engage with it mindlessly while their attention remains primarily on the task at hand. From simple stress balls and textured cubes to more intricate spinners and manipulatives, the variety of fidget tools available ensures that individuals can find an option that suits their specific needs and preferences, ultimately fostering a more productive and comfortable learning or working environment.

And yes for someone who doesn’t experience restlessness, anxiety or ADHD, fidget tools are most likely to be a distraction.
