Sport Roundup
Canterbury Duathlon, Y5 - 8 School Athletics, Selwyn Central Zones Athletics
Canterbury Duathlon: After many attempts to get this event off the ground following postponements from term 1, we finally rocked up to Ruapuna to run and bike our time away. The conditions were very warm, and many athletes found the track challenging in the heat. Our results varied and I think it is fair to say the place-getters were experienced campaigners of this type of event. We had 16 athletes attend this event with many parents assisting. I would like to thank everyone for your assistance.
Notable performances go to Eleanor - 9th/96 Y6 Girls; Sam 13th/138
Y5 - 8 School Athletics: After much worry about the dodgy weather and the possibility of having to change yet another sports event following many cancellations, all worries were alleviated when the clouds parted. (The wind stayed away for a majority of the day) A slightly new look to the athletics program saw increased participation and many records broken. I am sure this was partly due to awesome whānau support for our students. Many students participated in high jump, long distance races and the additional 200m race, which were all available on the day. The addition of dress up was embraced by many, but my hope is that each year this aspect of the event will become hotly contested too. Best dressed house support goes to Micah without a doubt!!

Selwyn Central Zones Athletics: Again the weather forecast left a few people restless through the night. The prospect of postponing such a large event has implications beyond what you could imagine. The call for the event to go ahead regardless, was a welcomed one for many I’m sure.
Our students jumped aboard the luxurious bus and parted ways early in the morning. With the first competitors starting at 9:30am, it was essential we got the prime sheltered spot, as Nga Puna Wai is renowned for cool winds and rain was forecast for on the day! We arrived with a very efficient Martha Paterson already set up - all that was left to do was get our team ready to compete. Miss O was left in charge of the team (and did a fine job with many parent helpers), while myself and a few willing parents ran the high-jump.
The weather was cold and damp to begin with, but played ball around midday. Though the clouds didn’t part too far but there was enough warmth in the air to remove a layer of clothing and dry out the track. We had many successes on the day and I would like to once again thank the parents who supported and assisted at this event. Without you our students wouldn’t be taking part. The highlight of the day for me was watching Olivia clear 1.31m to win the year 7 high jump. The smile on her face said it all! I would like to wish all those who have been selected to attend the Canterbury Primary Champs the best of luck.
