Reporting to Parents

Tracey Riley —

This year has seen the review, development and implementation of assessment and reporting processes that strengthen the partnership between home and school.

The journey so far includes:

  • Learning Conferences (Goal Setting) in Term 1, 2 and 3, designed to give students, parents and teachers the opportunity to discuss and celebrate progress and success.

  • The move to a progressions based reporting system which focuses on progress across curriculum levels.

  • The implementation of the Parent Portal which will form an integral part of real time reporting in 2020.

Curriculum Level Reporting

The Government discontinued the use of National Standards as a reporting tool in late 2017. Since then West Melton School alongside many other schools across the country have moved to reporting on the New Zealand Curriculum levels.

It is important to remember that curriculum levels are of more importance for teachers as we use them to guide our teaching, assessments and evaluations of learning. We keep you up to date on your child’s progress across these curriculum levels via our ‘Snapshots in Time’.

In 2019 the assessment team have been looking at designing a reporting process that meets the needs of our students, teachers and community. Throughout this process we have looked for models of best practice, sought feedback from our parents, and had professional development on the best use of our student management tool, Spotlight (a tool to help with real time reporting).

What is happening this term?

On Wednesday 4 December (Week 8) you will receive the second ‘Snapshot in Time’ for the year. This will be very similar to the one you received during Term 2. You will notice that the blue continuum on each curriculum area will have shifted slightly to the right from the earlier snapshot. This aligns with the 6 months of progress that is expected to have occurred. More information explaining the continuum will accompany the Snapshot. Also being sent home at this time is the reviewed Terms 3 / 4 Goal Sheet.

We do not have scheduled Learning Conferences this term, however, as is the case throughout the year, you are welcome to contact your child’s teacher for any concerns or clarification.

We are hoping to finalise our reporting system before the end of this year. There is likely to be some exciting differences to the start of the year - particularly around building partnerships. If you have any suggestions or comments then please contact Tracey. tracey.riley@westmelton.school.nz
