How Does Structured Literacy Look in Our Classrooms?

WMS Literacy —

At West Melton School, we are proud to use evidence-based approaches to teaching literacy that ensure all learners have the tools they need to succeed. Structured Literacy underpins our teaching of reading, writing, and spelling, providing a systematic and cumulative pathway to build essential skills.

Here’s what Structured Literacy looks like in our classrooms:

  • Reading: Younger students use decodable books from Little Learners Love Literacy to master early reading skills. Older students transition to texts that focus on developing fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. These include carefully chosen fiction and non-fiction texts that extend their critical thinking and understanding while applying the skills they’ve learned.

  • Spelling: Our spelling program, The Code, teaches children the rules and patterns of spelling in a logical sequence, building strong foundational skills.

  • Writing: With The Writing Revolution, we focus on explicit instruction in sentence structure and writing strategies, helping students connect their growing literacy skills to meaningful, purposeful writing.

  • Shared language and routines: Across all classrooms, we use consistent terminology and methods, helping students understand and apply what they learn in reading, spelling, and writing.

By using these proven programmes, we are empowering our students to become confident and skilled readers and writers.
