Kowhai Sanctuary and Soft Plastic Waste

Two weeks ago Tī Kōuka took part in a special plant out day at the Kowhai Sanctuary as part of the 'Grand Reopening of the Willows'. As well as planting 200 native plants, they also did some orienteering and ECan put on a sausage sizzle for lunch.

A recent survey of rubbish collected from the school ground showed that over half of the rubbish was from soft plastic food wrappers. Soft plastic waste is a huge local and global concern. We are addressing this in Term 2, by asking learners to remove any wrappers from food prior to being taken outside during morning tea. 

The Kōwhai Community have starting doing this and we are already seeing less rubbish around the school.
