If you do not Tell me or Show me How am I Meant to Know?

Mark Maddren —

At West Melton School, we do not assume our ākonga know what to do and how to behave in different settings, so we explicitly teach prosocial behaviours and routines.

Our implementation of the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) involves explicitly teaching these behaviours and routines. Some examples of the expected behaviour lessons taught are:

We show respect:

  • We wear our uniform with pride. Our School expectations are:

    • All children will wear their school hat when outdoors in T1/4

    • Children playing games, running and doing gymnastics should be wearing a hat where possible

    • Children will not wear hats inside to

    • Children without hats will play in the shade (under the trees in front of Tī Kōuka

  • We need to be polite and respectful as members of the community and people in the office may be working or assisting others. The school expectations are:

  • 2 people in the Office at a time

  • Use your manners - please and thank you

  • Opening doors for Adult

  • Waiting for others to pass through the door

  • Greeting office staff appropriately

  • Waiting quietly until it is your turn

We show vitality:

  • We actively take part in our learning. Our School expectations are:

    • Explaining ideas in our own words

    • Asking questions

    • Making decisions

    • Propose solutions

    • Problem solve

    • Keep on trying even when challenges occur

    • Bounce back and try again, even when things haven’t gone right

    • Focused on my work

    • Enjoying what I am doing
