Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) and our Beans

Mark Maddren —

West Melton School Community is now in their second year of using the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) Framework to develop and support our school culture.

It is based on developing positive and respectful relationships between all members of our West Melton School Community - ākonga, staff and whānau.

Our purpose statement

“We consistently foster relationships to sustain a secure and connected community where ākonga feel empowered and valued.”

Our school DRIVER values underpin how we enact our purpose statement.

D - Determination/Aumangea

R - Respect/Whakaute

I - Integrity/Ngākaupono

V - Vitality/Hiringa

E - Empathy/Aroha

R - Resilience/Manawaroa

We have completed our behaviour matrix and our teachers and staff are now teaching the behaviours we want to see students displaying (we do not assume children know how to behave).

Last year we implemented a new school-wide acknowledgement of students who show behaviours that align with our DRIVER values. This acknowledgement involves staff handing out kidney beans to students who are doing the right thing at playtimes and eating time. The students then take their bean to an area where we have set up some bean containers. These containers have different activities on them that we can do as a whole school. The students vote for their favourite activity by dropping their bean into a container.

Our focus this term at morning tea and lunch is Positive Play and using Kind Words which comes under our DRIVER value of Respect.

We also have a statement we share with the students as we give them the bean.

"Well done (Ka pai) for playing positively and using kind words during break times. You are showing our school value of Respect by using kind words to solve our problems."

The activities for this term are Hut Day, Movie Time and Pyjama / Bed Pal Day.
