Celebration of Learning

Kim Busch —

This is our school celebration (aka Assembly) that happens in our school every three weeks from in our wharenui.

We celebrate what is unique about West Melton School; sporting awards, enviro news, class trips etc.

The celebrations are primarily run by our ‘Ambassadors’ but are often joined by guest speakers. Also we enjoy singing our school waiata and having ‘fun with our principal’. Plus it includes the ‘bus ticket’ draw as part of our positive behaviour system.

During this time we sit in our Whānau groups (house groups) to encourage the sense of whānau connections. Back in 2015 we increased the number of and changed the names of our whānau groups.

We named the houses after pioneers in West Melton as a result of the 150 community celebrations in 2014 - students / community / staff were consulted and liked the idea. The suggested houses were…

Trickett (yellow), Hill (green), Newton (orange), Selwyn (purple), Langdale (blue) Ross (red)

With the hope that families would be kept together in the same house. There are staff members and student leaders assigned to each whānau group. They are encouraged to meet to remind all the students about positive behaviours, to buddy read and create inspiring chants.
