Sport Roundup

WMS Sport Team —

Sport this term has been much like the past two terms this year, stops and starts around every corner.

We were fortunate enough to squeeze our senior School Cross-country in at Kerrin Island early this term for runners who opted to run in championship races. The day, whilst a little chilly, provided excellent running conditions for 60+ competitors. A new Year 8 senior boys record has been set by Brooklyn, with a new time of 12:34 minutes. Ethan ran extremely close to breaking a long standing record in the year 5 boys event.

2020 results as follows:

Y5 Boys: 1st Ethan, 2nd Sam, 3rd Oliver.

Y6 Boys: 1st Drew, 2nd Liam, 3rd Fergus.

Y7 Boys: 1st Cam, 2nd Ollie, 3rd Henry.

Y8 Boys: 1st Brooklyn, 2nd Ryder, 3rd Max.

Y5 Girls: 1st Sophie, Isabel, 3rd Jess.

Y6 Girls: 1st Eleanor, 2nd Ashleigh, 3rd Skye.

Y7 Girls: 1st Elissa, 2nd Jordyn, 3rd Kendra.

A team of 35 runners went on to represent West Melton at the Selwyn Central Zone Cross Country at Halswell Quarry. Conditions were near perfect for this event which had competitors tackling hills and rougher terrain. We had many runners placed in the top 10 for their age group with notable performances by:

Y8 Boys: 1st Brooklyn

Y7 Boys: Bede 7th.

Y7 Girls - Jordyn 9th, Elissa 10th.

Y6 Girls: 2nd Eleanor, 7th Skye, Ashleigh 8th.

Y6 Boys: Lewi 7th.

Y5 Girls: 2nd Sophie, Isabel 6th, Jessica 7th, Hannah 8th.

Y5 Boys: 3rd Ethan, Charlie 4th, Sam 6th.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers who helped at both of these events. Without you our children would not be able to take part. While the remainder of the term leaves us with a lot of uncertainty around sports events due to restrictions placed on us, we are planning ahead with optimism and smiles. The decision makers have a very tough time ahead. Some events to look forward to in the event we move back to level 1 for Term 4: Canterbury Swimming, Canterbury Duathlon, Athletics, Triathlon and Summer sports tournament.

Thank you to Julie Sims and Shelley Wyatt for sharing their photos.
