2021 School Theme - Turangawaewae

Kim Busch —

Our 2021 Theme for the school is “Turangawaewae” which means a sense of identity and independence associated with having a particular home base. We have reworded it for our ākonga and communities as “Turangawaewae - where we stand”

Our learning will focus around the connected part of our ICE DRIVER vision and include the global competencies of Collaboration and Citizenship.

Connected: Tūhono Collaboration/Mahi Ngātahi and Citizenship/Mana āhuatanga

Supporting our theme will be the ideas the ākonga generate about how we can use the past to learn for the future. We felt this could be promoted through:

  • Celebration of Learning
  • Our 150th Celebration of the school
  • Home school partnership - shared learning
  • Building on and developing our whakatauki - integrating into everyday language and reflections
  • Analogy of our roots linked to our history
  • More New Zealand based history
  • Promoting our school’s cultural narrative
  • Displays in every community
  • Using the tiriti o waitangi and relating it to our class treaty
  • Co-constructing class treaties to reflect ICE DRIVER vision and values
  • Using ideas from the cultural narrative to unpack meaning and symbolism of the flora te reo names we have been gifted
  • Educating parents about why community names have been chosen

We are excited about this year and see it as a great year for cultural growth. If you have any information about the local area that would aid us in the planning, please let us know.
