Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories in our School Curriculum
We are excited to share with you the latest developments in your child's education here at West Melton School. This year, we have embarked on a journey to incorporate Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories (ANZH) into our curriculum, and we wanted to take a moment to update you on our progress.
Professional Development: Our dedicated teachers have been engaging in continuous professional development throughout the year to ensure they are well-prepared to teach ANZH content. They have been working diligently to enhance their knowledge and skills in this new area of social sciences.
Exploring Big Ideas: Our students have had the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Aotearoa New Zealand. They have been exploring some of the big ideas that surround this important aspect of our curriculum. This includes understanding the historical context, knowing key events and figures, and actively participating in activities related to ANZH histories.
'Understand, Know, and Do' Aspect: The ANZH curriculum refresh focuses on three key aspects: Understand, Know, and Do. Students are not only encouraged to understand the history but also to know and do something with that knowledge. This approach fosters critical thinking, active engagement, and a deeper connection to the subject matter.
Hero Postings: We are thrilled to announce that this week, you will have the opportunity to see our first Hero posting showcasing our students' learning in Aotearoa New Zealand's Histories. Hero postings are a way for us to celebrate and share their achievements with you, giving you a glimpse into the exciting educational journey your child is on.
As we continue to integrate ANZH content into our curriculum, we remain committed to providing a comprehensive and inclusive education that reflects the rich history and culture of New Zealand. We believe that by doing so, we are helping our students become well-rounded individuals with a deep appreciation for their heritage and the world around them.
We encourage you to engage with your child about their learning in ANZH histories and to explore opportunities to further enrich their understanding of this vital part of our nation's past.
