Eco Warriors News

Enviro —

Kia ora, Lily and Caya here, your eco warrior media newsletter writers. Lately the eco-warriors have been put into groups looking after worm bins, chickens, vegetable gardens, recycling and media.

This week we will be interviewing eco-warriors Nova Helps, Claudia Culley and Mrs McKendry to see their amazing answers about recycling at West Melton.

Claudia Culley (Tōtora)

What can the year 5 to 8 do to help?

They can put the paper in the paper bin and put the rubbish in the rubbish bin because I've noticed in the year 8’s paper bin there are sometimes tissues. Also please stop putting wet tissues and subway wrappers in the paper bin.

Why do you like recycling?

Because it is good for the environment and the environment is good for us.

Where does the rubbish in the rubbish bin go?

It just goes in a big bin that’s near the school pool near the paper bins as well. And one day a week it’s picked up by the Selwyn district council. But the rubbish in the rubbish bin just goes to the landfill.

What is a landfill?

It’s a great big dump and rubbish that can’t be recycled go there and it just builds up.

What can the year 0 to 4’s do to help?

Well just stop putting the small little pieces of paper in the paper bin. Cause it’s kinda hard to get them out and put them in the rubbish bin.

Nova Helps (Toetoe)

What can the year 0 to 4’s do to help?

Probably not putting rubbish in the paper bin by accident.

Does cardboard go in the paper bin?

No, the thick cardboard doesn’t but the thin cardboard can.

Why do you like recycling?

Because it’s better for the earth.

Mrs McKendry

What can the year 0 to 4 do to help?

They definitely need to put paper only in the paper bin and not tiny pieces of paper.

Does cardboard go in the paper bin?

Really thick cardboard doesn't go in the bin, it should go outside next to the staff car park. Thin cardboard can go in the paper bin.

Where does the paper in the paper bin go?

The class paper bins get put into big bins next to the school pool and then they get picked up by the Selwyn district council once a week.

Do you like recycling?

It’s awesome, much better than wasting things.

Why do you like recycling?

I love it because I love looking after our environment instead of wasting things.
