At West Melton School, we’re committed to evidence-based teaching approaches that cater to individual learning needs. Structured Literacy is a powerful tool in supporting our students' reading development and fostering a love for learning that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Structured Literacy is a research-based approach to teaching reading and writing that focuses on explicit and systematic instruction in foundational skills. This approach has proven to be highly effective for all students

Here's why Structured Literacy works:

  • Explicit Instruction: Teachers directly teach phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. This ensures that all students have access to the information they need to succeed.

  • Systematic Instruction: Skills are taught in a logical sequence, building on previously learned concepts. This allows students to develop a strong foundation in reading and writing.

  • Multisensory Learning: Structured Literacy incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements to engage learners and enhance learning. This helps students make connections between sounds, symbols, and meaning.

  • Differentiated Instruction: Teachers can tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring that all learners are challenged and supported.

By providing explicit, systematic, and multisensory instruction, Structured Literacy empowers students to become confident and skilled readers and writers.
