Health Curriculum Community Consultation 2024

WMSNovember 7, 2024

Kia ora whānau!

Your views are needed on our Health Curriculum guiding statement and the programmes we draw upon to deliver this at West Melton School. Every two years, the Board of Trustees consults with the parent community regarding the Health Curriculum. We value your input on our Health Curriculum at West Melton School. Please read through our draft curriculum statement and the programmes we are currently implementing.

We are keen to know:

1. Your level of agreement with our draft Health curriculum statement.

2. What do you consider to be the strengths or highlights of our Health curriculum.

3. If you partly or do not agree with the overview of the Health education programme,  then what you think needs to change, your questions, or the nature of your concerns. OR what further information do you need to be able to respond?

After reviewing the information, please take a few minutes to complete our survey

Your feedback is crucial in shaping this important area of learning.

Thank you, Tracey Riley - Principal

Health Programmes in the New Zealand Curriculum

‘Health and Physical Education’ is a key learning area in the New Zealand Curriculum. This consultation is about the Health section of that Learning Area, which includes mental health, sexuality education, food and nutrition, body care and physical safety.

Effective Health programmes include the key areas of learning from the New Zealand Curriculum to help children to develop:

  • Improved levels of movement skills

  • The ability to make informed decisions about how to care for their bodies

  • The ability to form and maintain positive relationships with others

  • The ability to accept and value individual differences

  • The willingness to apply themselves with vigour and to take risks

All of these should contribute to their self-esteem and build a positive and responsible sense of hauora (physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being).

Our Draft Health Curriculum Statement

West Melton School will implement a programme of health and physical education, intending to make a positive difference to the well being of students and their communities. This will be based on the New Zealand Curriculum and in keeping with the school’s charter and values.

In delivering health and physical education West Melton School kaiako will use a range of appropriate teaching strategies that engage ākonga and enable the development of the key competencies while taking opportunities to integrate health education learning with other aspects of the NZ Curriculum.

For each student, the programme will attempt to give the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values required to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. It will have a holistic approach, developing the 'whole child' including their social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. The school will not only promote each individual's health but also encourage students to recognise the contribution they can make, by becoming purposeful citizens in a caring community, including identifying environmental factors and social influences in people's lives.

The Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum sets the direction for health and physical education programmes. The curriculum promotes knowledge, skills and attitudes for students to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and contribute to the well-being of others through the notions of holistic well-being, health promotion, the encouragement of positive attitudes towards good health and the importance of a healthy environment.

Students need to be challenged to develop their competencies in contexts that are increasingly wide-ranging and complex. Going forward, we will use the term ‘Health and Wellbeing’ as an encompassing term for this area of teaching and learning.
