Many parents find themselves dreading the moment when it’s time to take away their child’s iPad, with the resulting meltdowns, tears, and outbursts becoming a common household occurrence. But why do children suffer from these ‘tech tantrums’, and what can parents do to stop them?

Watch this two minute video to learn more about dealing with meltdowns

Key learnings

In this video, we will cover the following:

  • Understanding the design: Digital platforms and apps are intentionally designed to captivate children’s attention.

  • Countdown warnings: Prepare children for the end of screen time with ten, five and one-minute countdown warnings. A visible clock or timer can help them self-manage the countdown.

  • Firm boundaries: When screen time is over, turn off devices and avoid renegotiations.

  • Engaging alternatives: Follow screen time with outdoor activities or tactile, creative pursuits.

  • Consistency is key: Set consistent boundaries and offer enticing alternatives to screen time.
