Kōtuku- week 3

Kirsten Russell —

Kia ora kōtuku families and friends,

We have had lots of cool learning experiences in the last couple of weeks.

Congratulations firstly to our Basketball teams that went out to play at Canterburys. They both came 3rd in their pool.

Over the last two weeks, we have had our transition programme to high school. Year 12 LHS students planned for their NCEA health studies. In Term 2 they were interviewing the students to find out what they wanted to know about high school and their concerns. They then planned a programme to help support the students with their well-being and understanding of high school. We have a few more connections coming up throughout the year to help support this transition to high school. We strongly recommend if you have not done so already, to have your enrolments in with high school as soon as possible.

In sports, we have been working through our teams for Koru Games and tournaments. We will move into our athletics programme nearer the end of the term. The Ski trip is also fast approaching so please ensure your child's permission slip is filled in. In fitness, we have been doing lots of games through the Movewell resource.

In literacy, we have had a focus on creative writing, responding to news articles, and processing quickly to get ideas down. As we have production coming up our learning is intertwined in this. We have also been working on understanding sentence structure in a more in-depth way by looking into how a complete sentence needs a subject and a predicate. We have continued to have structured literacy as well and focused on spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary development.

In numeracy, we have been going through Geometry and Measurement with a real focus on measuring angles, perimeter, area, and volume in numerous contexts. The students have also been working on designing mini-figures or mini-monsters (which links to our creative side in the inquiry) using 3D shapes, forming nets, and calculating the surface area and volume of the shapes that go into their mini-figures. Otago Problem solving has been occurring. We have also been trialling for our CantaMaths teams and CantaMaths projects are underway for those who have chosen this.

In languages, we have Spanish and Te Reo Māori. In Spanish, students have been learning about food. in Te Reo, students have been learning about e hia (how many?) and linking to their learning last term of objects in life are able to answer how many of a certain thing. For example 'how many are there?' (e hia?); 'how many are wanted?' (kia hia?); how many people are there (tokohia?); 'how many?/how long?' (ka hia?); and 'how many?' (kia tuahia?)...

In inquiry, the students are leading and creating their part of the production. They are looking into the stage set-up, what part they will perform, researching the history around this, music needed etc.

William Pike Challenge, we have been working on our community service element and our passion projects to work towards this certificate. Please discuss with your child what they have chosen to do and feel free to get involved to help them achieve this goal.

Have a lovely upcoming weekend!
