What Do the Curriculum Levels Mean?
The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) is divided into levels, each level takes 2-3 years for children to work through. Children in both Year 1 and Year 2, are expected to be working at Level 1 of the NZC. Children in both Year 3 and Year 4 are expected to be working at Level 2 of the NZC, and so on. You can see from the diagram below that each curriculum level is spread across multiple year levels.
Sub Bands
We have divided each curriculum level into 4 sub bands to show the progress your tamariki makes at two different points every year. Our sub bands are:
B or 'beginning' to indicate ākonga are working just within the level.
D or ‘developing’ to indicate they are developing the knowledge and skills at this curriculum level and can demonstrate their understanding ‘some of the time’.
C or ‘consolidating’ to indicate they are demonstrating more consistency and are starting to make connections with their learning.
P or ‘proficient’ to indicate that they can independently and consistently demonstrate their knowledge. They can transfer their knowledge to other areas and justify their thinking.
Our progress graphs indicate where tamariki are currently working at. This is the level that they are being taught at in the classroom.
