Whio- Week 3

Kirsten Russell —

Kia ora Whio whānau,

Welcome back to term 3, we hope you had a restful break with the whānau and managed some downtime. Term 3 is jam-packed with lots of activities that will appeal to our learners including the Production, Koru Games and Ski Trip to name a few.

We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting whānau for our parent-teacher interviews. They’re a great opportunity to touch base on progress in core curriculum areas and next steps moving forward for terms 3 and 4.

Planning is well underway for the ski trip in week 8. Please fill in the permission slip ASAP.

We had a very successful production provocation day on Tuesday with the students dressing in their decade. The engagement levels were very high as we strutted our stuff on the catwalk and took part in some decade-appropriate jump jam routines.

We are beginning the process of writing our part in the script and continuing on with the research component of each decade.

Numeracy- we have made a start on decimals and fractions this term and most students are managing this well. This subject is often challenging for some, but with a little bit of extra work at home on Education Perfect or seeking guidance from the teacher in class, a better understanding will be just around the corner. We are also in the process of selecting a CantaMaths team. The class is essentially being put through a trial to find our possible candidates. It’s not just about knowledge, it’s also about who can work under pressure and collaborate effectively with their teammates.

Literacy- This term literacy has a big component of the production woven through with writing, research and reading activities. We are looking at significant events in our given decades and creating information reports outlining the key details. There is a great deal of buy-in when students know that their research is specifically for a purpose such as informing their costumes etc for production. Creative writing and sentence structure is a major focus also. Speech competitions will also be taking place.

Sport- We are beginning our training programme for the Koru Games which will be taking place later in the term. We will be selecting teams in a wide range of sports. Koru Games is a significant event on the sporting calendar and is only for Year 7 and 8 students. The tournament runs for 3 days, more information will be coming out soon. We are also continuing our other sporting programme focussing on the winter tournaments. So far we have the football team through to the Canterbury Zones, the Rugby and Netball teams will be competing in the Lincoln Zone tournament in the coming weeks.

As always, feel free to get in touch if need be. It is a very busy term ahead with lots of events, so no question is a silly question.
