-What is a cinquain poem?
A cinquain poem is a type of poem where syllables are the most important thing in a cinquain there are five lines in a cinquain poem the first line has 2 syllables the second line has 4 syllables the 3rd line has 6 syllables the 4th line had 8 syllables the last line has 2 syllables this is how you write a cinquain poem. Here is an example:
Seasons
Spring is lively
Winter is magical
Summer is the time for ice cream
Leaves fall
A limerick is a funny type of poem the first two lines rhyme and the third and fourth rhyme but the 3rd and 4th lines don't rhyme with the top two lines and the last line rhymes with the first line here is an example:
There once was a man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket
And his daughter named nan
Ran away with a man
And as for the bucket Nantucket.
I used to poem
A 'I used to' poem is a poem that not many people know. The top two lines are the same as the bottom two. This is the format we had to write a "I used to' poem
I used to...
But now I...
I always...
But now I never...
I once...
But now I...
If I could...
I would...
I never...
but I might...
I can’t...
But I can...
I won't...
but I might...
I used to...
but now I...
Haiku Poems
In Toroa, we have been learning how to write all sorts of poems. On Tuesday, we learned how to write a Haiku poem. A haiku poem has three lines. The first line has five syllables. The second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. We all made up our own poems and had a choice to publish them on Canva or Google Docs.
Example:
Water, so clear, lush
Silent, quiet, moving, calm
An element, peace.
Diamante Poems
Last week, we learned how to write diamante poems. A diamante poem has five lines. It is about two opposite emotions and you write it in the shape of a diamond. The first line is the first emotion . The second line is two adjectives. The third line is three action words. The fourth line is also two adjectives and the fifth line is the opposite emotion to the first emotion.
Example:
Rain
Wet, cold
Showering, falling, cooling
Drops, water, heat, ray
Blazing, warming, soothing
Bright, sizzling
Sunshine.
‘If I Were Poem
On Thursday, last week, we all wrote ‘If I were’ poems. It’s about what you would do if you were in charge of the world. We all got a template for the ‘If I Were’ poem to help us write. It was very long and my hand got very tired after I wrote the poem. We all worked very hard. It was very fun imagining what we would do if we were in charge of the world.
Example:
If I were in charge of the world
I’d cancel litter and all rubbish
to save the environment, Wednesday mornings
Broccoli and also climate change.
If I were in charge of the world, there would be free food,
everyone could follow their own dreams and art lessons for everybody.
If I were in charge of the world, you wouldn’t have floods or wild animals.
You wouldn’t have to pay money or do anything boring. You wouldn’t even have to eat
disgusting foods. If I were in charge of the world, ice cream with cake and whipped cream would be a vegetable. All sweet things would be healthy and veggies wouldn't exist, and a person who sometimes forgot to be early and forgot to brush their hair when it’s curly would still be in charge of the world.

Korfball
For the last couple of weeks, our syndicate has been participating in korfball training with the MIXX coaches. We were introduced to the rules slowly step by step… Here are some examples of what happened during our first session.
Firstly they split us up into 2 teams. At first, we just had a few rules, the basic ones. Korfball is played with your hands not your feet like football is played with. Also no contact and no striping of the ball basically like netball. So this meant you could run with the ball, there were no outs and so on. That of course made it quite hectic on the court, plus everybody was on the court, all 30 of us!!
Once a few goals had been scored on the tall hoops (like netball hoops) our Mixx coach thankfully put some more rules in!! For example, we were not allowed to move with the ball, which means no stepping and when you go to shoot you can only shoot when no one is defending you, this means if someone has got their arms up in front of you when you have the ball and is arm to shoulder length away from you. We also only had 8 for each team on the court at one time, 2 girls and 2 boys for the attacking end and 2 boys and 2 girls for the defending end and the same for the other team. We also had outs this time which was the court area of course. This time the game was quite good, especially with no one able to run with the ball.
After playing for about ten minutes with all of those rules we got called in again and this time all the rules were put in place the added rules were for one you can only defend your gender and for two every two goals, you switch ends so if you were on the attacking half for your team after 2 goals you switch to the other side and become a defender for your team.
These are all the rules for korfball. Our whole syndicate thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play korfball. And for those who want
to go further with Korfball will be getting to go to a tournament next week on Wednesday at the Selwyn korfball MIXX Cup.
