Helping your child at home

Lincoln Primary —

It is important to spend time with your child discussing their school day and appreciating what they have learned.

· Share and read any books sent home from school.

· Assist your child to learn the alphabet.

· Show interest in any art or craft work that comes home and try to display the work.

· Have plenty of books, pencils, scrap paper, colouring books so that your child can play at being at school.

· Use every day experiences to enhance learning eg. ‘let us count the birds on the lawn’.

· When working with your child remember: a little and often.

Attitude to Learning

We have many of the values and attitudes of the wider community, but we also hope that your child will learn that:

Learning can be fun

Learning can be creative

Learning can be hard work

Homework

Year 1 and 2 pupils have reading homework only. If children at this level work steadily from 9.00am to 3.00pm, they have done a fair day’s work.

Other homework is introduced from Year 3, such as words to learn and reading to go over. Homework should now be the child’s responsibility, with support and encouragement from parents.

Homework expectations will vary according to age. Fifteen minutes for a five-year-old and up to forty-five minutes per day for a Year 8 pupil.

Homework should be a positive experience. If for some reason it causes stress to parent or child, please STOP and discuss with your child's teacher.
