Science roadshow comes to Lincoln
Lincoln Primary - November 30, 2023
The Science Roadshow strongly supports the Nature of Science strand and the Five Foundational Science Capabilities and is an exciting and entertaining learning programme of two live demonstrations and 55-60 hands-on exhibits that broaden students' knowledge of the STEAM subjects.
Each year the shows, themes and exhibits change. The new 2023 programme was a 70 minute session which included two shows presented on the topics of:
Mighty Materials - Physical and chemical properties of substances, such as metals and fabrics, and how these are put to use in everyday applications.
Sounding Out Waves - The characteristics of sound such as pitch, volume, how fast it travels, what substances it travels through, how it travels and the many effects these have on things we can or cannot hear.
In between the two shows students had free time to explore a range of interactive exhibits under the themes of Earth Science, Helping the Senses, Light, Movement, Pressure, Observations and Inferences.
A group of our Year 8 students were chosen to be scientific explainers for the day. Maureen Jones (National Science Roadshow Manager) said "they related well to their peers and were wonderful representatives for your school."
The Mayor of Selwyn, Sam Broughton, certainly seemed impressed when they were explaining the exhibits to him during his visit.
Here are a few comments from some of our wonderful scientific explainers:
Olive: "It was very interesting and I learnt a lot. What I enjoyed the most was the spinny chair with gravity and how you can make it faster and slower. "
Sophia T: "I enjoyed the workshop science shows. It was cool helping the younger children increase their science skills."
Nafiz: "I really enjoyed it. It was great to see a lot of stuff we hadn't seen before at school. A lot of kids playing was great to see and lots of feedback from kids enjoying the interactive element of it. It was great to be able to lead this and help other students out. I loved the variety of things to do. Having different perspectives from the experts was also awesome."
