Whānau te reo Māori

Jan Roberts & Liz Lapthorne —

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome to this year's first session of Whānau te reo Māori. Today we are introducing the phrase Homai meaning pass me / give me. It is a phrase that we can use in our everyday lives. A great place and time to practise this could be when you are having some kai, at a bbq or having dinner with your whānau.

Come on, give it a go!

Homai… Te = the (singular). E.g. te apple = the apple.

 Ngā = the (plural). E.g. ngā apples = the apples.

Taku = my (singular). E.g. taku apple = my apple.

Aku = my (plural).E.g. aku apples = my apples

Tō = your (singular). E.g. tō apple = your apple

Ō = your (plural). E.g Your apples

 For example:

Homai te salt = pass me the salt

Homai ngā sausages = pass me the sausages

Homai taku drink = pass me my drink

Homai aku placemats = pass me my placemats

Homai tō plate = pass me your plate

Homai ō plates = pass me your plates

And, of course, we would add please at the end of the phrase.

Heoi anō tāku mō nāianei. That is all for now.
