Team 3-4 News
Team 3-4 has been learning about Te Ao Māori and Māori arts.
For the past two days our Year 4 tamariki have been visiting Te Pā o Moki Marae. This is a beautiful Marae located at the edge of Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere). This is the Marae of Taumutu, our local Rūnanga.
The tamariki have been learning about Marae protocols, sharing their mihi mihi in an authentic context, and hearing pūrākau related to the creation and establishment of the area. The tamariki also learned about kai, especially tuna (eel), and how this area is a taonga abundant with kai and kai moana. In the afternoon we explored the nature garden and identified many native plants and fauna. Please ask your child about their āko.
The Year 3 tamariki have been exploring a range of Maori arts. They have been learning how to use rākau, spin poi, and create their own sequences of moves. They have also been introduced to a range of new waiata and Māori hand games that they will continue to learn.
Our visual arts component used the koru to create a template that was then used in a series of prints that contributed towards a collaborative artwork. This will be displayed in the library so please feel free to pop in and take a look.
