Prioritising Your Mental Health

Pip Macdonald —

By looking after your own mental health, your mind and body will reap the rewards.

It’s important that you recognise your unique needs and develop strategies as well as habits to value them. According to the, ‘Calm, Take A Breath,’ website, by looking after yourself and prioritising your mental wellbeing you can prevent stress, burnout, depression and anxiety. Our quote of the week for our students at school this week represents this by saying, ‘Be good to yourself, people will come and go in your life, but the person you see in the mirror will be there for ever.’

Here are some tips below if you struggle to prioritise your own mental health:

  • Don’t take on more than you can realistically handle

  • It’s OK to say ‘no’, especially if it’s something you don’t enjoy

  • Keep a promise or a goal that you have made for yourself

  • Make sure you are recharged before you help others

  • Talk to someone about your feelings

  • Don’t make excuses for any unhealthy habits

  • Take accountability for mistakes or your behaviour, and then forgive yourself

  • Challenge yourself to try new things

  • Constantly work on improving your mindset

  • Don’t compare yourself to others

  • Eat, sleep and exercise well
