Looking after ourselves - Looking after others, especially visitors.
Manaakitanga (pronounced ma naa key tongue a)
This term we introduce our value, manaakitanga - looking after ourselves and others. We are keen to unpack what this will look like, sound like and feel like here at Burnham School. The 'new time' for our school mihi whakatau was one example of how we welcomed the opportunity for new whānau to feel more connected by meeting their classroom teacher and watch their child make new friendships.
Another example of manaakitanga was shown by students of Ngā Manu Tiori a Tū who stayed together after school to host the whānau hui. They helped each other to prepare platters of kai, set the two tables, one for the adults and the tamariki as well as make welcome signs. They felt proud to be able to serve their whānau kai and to open and close the hui with karakia.
In terms of looking after ourselves, every Thursday afternoon we undertake Navigating the Journey: Relationships and Sexuality education across the school.
We are committed to deepening our knowledge to improve our practice of what manaakitanga mean across our school and our community. We look forward to sharing more examples of manaakitanga as the term continues.
