Aotearoa New Zealand Histories

Linda Sweeny —

Me tiro whakamuri, kia anga whakamua. If we want to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s future, start with our past.

Aotearoa New Zealand is on a journey to ensure that all ākonga in our schools and kura learn how our histories have shaped our present day lives.

Aotearoa New Zealand's histories is part of the learning in the social sciences learning area of The New Zealand Curriculum.

Follow this link to the website which is home to the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories curriculum content, guidance, and resources.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to:

  • invite whānau, hapū and iwi to share local tikanga and knowledge
  • include mātauranga Māori and te ao Māori sources in history learning
  • use place-based education to enable ākonga to better understand the events that have shaped their community.

Please make sure you take a look at the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories display at our schools 'Community Engagement Event' on Wednesday 28th September.
