Understanding New Zealand Curriculum Levels
The following graph is intended as a guide that shows the expectations for learners of each year group in relation to the New Zealand Curriculum.
The gradual shading at each level recognises that learning is a
personal journey and students make progress at different rates;
within any year group, there will be students achieving at different
levels.
When we report mid and end of the year you will see the 'best fit' level that your child is working at for Mathematics, Reading and Writing. For some students, this will mean working on goals at different levels for their year group. These levels could be below where extra learning support is needed to enable them to meet their expectation or in some cases they may be working on goals beyond their year group expectation. A 'best fit' level is determined two times per year by your child's teacher (mid and end) to give you as parents/caregivers an indication of how your child is progressing against the NZ curriculum expectations.
Example;
If a child is a Year 3 student (Child A) - you will see by looking at the graph that at both mid and end of the year they are expected to be working towards level 2 of the New Zealand curriculum in Mathematics, Reading and Writing.
(Child B) is also a Year 3 student. For this child let's say Mathematics, for example, the best-fit level for that child in Mathematics is that they are Working within Level 2. This indicates that Child B is working beyond their expectation as a Year 3 student as would be expected for a Year 4 student.
