Pākihiroa Week 7 Update

Shannon King —

What a week it has been, the sun has been out, birds singing and we have had the opportunity to get out and do sports.

On our usual Tuesday sports rotations as a hub we have been learning different skills of run, jump and throw. The purpose of these lessons are to equip students with the skills to be able to move within a space in different directions, paces and using different techniques. We have explored how to throw a ball under arm at a target to make it move, developing their jumping technique with a large ball to move from one spot to another and back again and throwing bean bags at a target to score points and work as a team. Giving the students an opportunity to develop these skills in smaller groups with direct teaching enabled them to have success in our school Athletics Fun Day.

Read what some of the students enjoyed about the day -

For the last two Tuesday morning’s we have had the opportunity to go out and learn the skills of futsal. We have had a coach come in and teach specific skills of controlling the ball with our feet, travelling with the ball and then playing a game of futsal 4 players to a team. Futsal develops early motor skills combined with important social skills in a fun and safe environment. We are really glad we had this opportunity to have a go at a new sport.
