What We Do

Te Kura o Tuahiwi Board operates in accordance with the Education Act (1989). It is the Crown entity responsible for the governance and the control of the management of the school. The Board is the employer of all staff in the school, is responsible for setting the school’s strategic direction in conjunction with parents, staff and students, and ensuring that its school provides a safe environment and quality education for all its students. Boards are also responsible for overseeing the management of personnel, curriculum, property, finance, and administration.

What We’ve Done – Working Towards Our Goals

• Strategic Plan – One of the most important things the Board of Trustees does it to set the “strategic direction” of the school. The strategic plan is really the blueprint or “road map” for everything that goes on in our school and our community. We have worked hard on our strategic plan, in consultation with the school community, over the past few years. 

• Logo - In 2013 the kura undertook a review of the school logo to ensure it depicted who we are and where we are from. Our mountain Maukatere stands majestically in the background. The long and short finned Tuna are the kaitiaki of Ruataniwha (Cam River) and symbolize our connections to local awa and our past plentiful mahinga kai resource. The Tuna also symbolize that no matter how far away tamariki may journey, they will always return home. The stars represent the three baskets of knowledge, the three stars of Tautore (Orion's Belt) and can be further interpreted. The symbolism three is a characteristic of many facets of Māori culture. Ngā mihi to Priscilla Cowie for interpreting our vision into the striking logo we have today.
  

• Graduate Profile - By the end of Year 8 a Tuahiwi Graduate will:
  

  • Be a responsible, informed decision maker, who is physically active and will show respect for self and others through positive relationships.

  • Be academically confident in them self, to manage challenge and change, to be a lifelong learner, and meet their personal potential.

  • Understand who they are, where they are form, and where they belong.

  • Value active participation in the local and global community, embracing diversity and striving to be become leaders of the future.

  • Effectively communicate in Te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
    

• Teaching & Learning Programmes – Ensuring our programmes focus on our students needs. Our current focus is on te reo Māori, literacy, mathematics and eLearning

• Investment in Technology – Information Technology is a continued focus: ensuring that Tuahiwi learners benefit from a future-focused learning environment.

• Specialist Programmes – Te reo Māori, Junior, Middle school and Senior Kapahaka, Mau Rakau, Whakairo, Te Waka Mauri Ora leadership programme, Guitar lessons, North Canterbury Recreational and Sports Trust, Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust initiative (working on a natural environment project at Woodend Beach), and Technology Programme at Kaiapoi Borough School.

• Ongoing Support – Learning Community Cluster, Adult Reo classes depending on interest, Whānau Hui, links to Ngāi Tūāhuriri Runanga and the marae, North Canterbury Resource Teachers of Literacy, and Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour, Resource Teacher of Māori, Mana Ake and North Canterbury wellbeing.

• This Website – Our website enables more timely communication clearer insight into coming events, easier access to policies and procedures, and better sharing of information. The launch of this website helps us meet our strategic goal of engaging our community through high quality communication.
