Safety Reminders

Jess Ormsby —

As we are on the way out to the end of the year, it is timely to remind ourselves of keeping safe at what is becoming a busy time for us all!

Sun: It has started reaching into the 30s during the day in Tuahiwi.  It is critical that your tamaiti has a pōtae at kura whānau mā! Applying sunscreen at home in the mornings is also necessary at the moment.

Hayfever: There have been severe attacks of hayfever amongst our tamariki this week.  It is essential to make sure that your child's named hayfever medicine is given to Berniece at the Office in case of an emergency.  There are no pharmacies in Tuahiwi, and unfortunately we do not have spare supplies!

Emergency Contact Details: Should we need to ring you in an emergency , or even for something like hayfever medicine, we must absolutely have your most recent cell number, and the correct number of the Emergency Contact for your whānau which is easy to update with Berniece at the Office.

Uniform: With the intense heat at Tuahiwi at the moment, our tamariki need to be wearing shorts - or having a pair in their bags.  There has been an increase in bleeding notices and heat exhaustion at the moment as tamariki are wearing polar fleece tracksuit pants and their school uniform jackets during very hot weather and trying country conditions.

Road Safety:  We do appreciate that the community carpark is tricky for whānau to use because of the small number of parks.  We urge you all to remember the following if you need to park on Tuahiwi Road:

  • use the road crossing to collect your child and return to your car
  • ask your tamariki to use the crossing if they are going across the road to meet you at your car independently
  • arrange a consistent place and side of the road to park and wait - for instance at the letter boxes by Pitama Drive
  • respect our community by parking on the road and not blocking driveways
