A camping we will go...

Gabrielle Fry —

In week two of Term 2 Te Rūma Pūkeko had a wonderful haerenga to Takamatua Bay near Akaroa.

Camp at Takamatua Bay was a huge success and our tamariki and kaiako loved every minute! We pushed our boundaries with rock climbing at Clip and Climb, explored Birdlings Flat and looked at the massive waves finding a baby shark  (do, do, do, do) on the shore.

Kaharoa taught us about how our iwi travelled across from Takamatua Bay to Onawe Peninsula to the Pā with kai and supplies and the wars that were fought there.

Okains Bay Kura played games with us and we wandered around their marvellous museum and pondered over the taonga there.

Akaroa put on a stunning afternoon for us to fossick around the beach identifying crabs and jelly fish and at Halswell Quarry, we learnt about how the peninsula was formed and about the many different types of rocks a volcano produces. We found out that the Lyttleton volcano created Banks peninsula millions of years ago and how Birdlings Flat is unique in its formation.

It was a busy three days but so much learning and making of new friends was done. We are hoping to have Okains Bay Kura visit later on in the year.

We are very thankful to Chisnallwood Intermediate for letting us borrow their amazing Camp Taylor.
