Māhinga Kai

Tuahiwi SchoolNovember 1, 2022

On Thursday, the 20th of October, Puaka travelled to Huria Reserve in Kaiapoi to partake in a Planting Day as part of their Kaupapa this term, Māhinga Kai. Whilst at the reserve the tamariki engaged in various planting activities;

These included;

  • Digging holes and planting a range of New Zealand natives
  • Looking at Biodiversity and Ecology, including digging up a range of creepy crawlies
  • Raking bark and mulch as well as creating planting guards to protect the various plant species
  • A Māhinga kai hikoi, with Matua Makarini, where the students got to learn about the importance of the awa and surrounding whenua as well as pull up a hīnaki and witness how our ancestors fished for various ika.

The day was an amazing success and all our tamariki learned some new facts. Altogether they planted 900 plants, and had their interest spiked in preparation for this term’s Kaupapa topic, Māhinga Kai.
