Wilford School hosts Hautū Workshop for Hutt Valley School Boards

Wilford School —

Parent Trustees from ten Hutt Valley Schools were able to exchange ideas and learning from their own communities at a shared workshop on the BoT resource: Hautū last term.

The workshop was facilitated by former Principal, Darrell Waiti. Hautū is a self review tool for parent trustees to assess their own level of cultural responsiveness as a board and across their schools.

Darrell took parent trustees through Hautū and talked about how it could be applied in a way that is authentic. He discussed the importance of ensuring that the voices and aspirations of all parents and whānau are represented in BoT decisions. The Hautū tool would assist all parent trustees to reflect on what they were doing for Māori tamariki in four key areas:

  • Kakau - Accountability
  • Tinana - Leadership
  • Rapa - Representation of Māori
  • Koinga - Employer

The workshop also referenced Ka Hikitea, the Government's strategy for Māori education. The newly revised plan sets out the 30 year vision for Māori achievement. A critical read for everyone.
