Tumuaki Comments

Kathryn Smith —

This week’s Tumuaki Comments are about naming things, health curriculum consultation and keeping gates closed during the school day. The newsletter has reminders about Dogman, the movie night fundraiser, Easter goodies for sale and the working bee at the end of the month.

He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa

Ngā mihi nui to dancers from Kerry School of Irish Dancing who performed for us this morning in our hui o te kura (assembly).

Kerry School of Irish Dancing

Ko wai tō ingoa?

What’s your name?

Please, please, please! Name the property of your tamaiti!

We’ve had a number of helmets go missing this term.  We’ve also found some helmets.  When there is an ingoa on the helmet, it’s easy for us to return it to the right tamaiti.

Please also ensure that you also write the ingoa of your tamaiti on their kākahu (clothing).

Health Curriculum Consultation

Every two years schools are required to consult with their hapori about how we deliver the Health curriculum.  If you are particularly interested in any aspect of how the Health curriculum is delivered at Wilford, you might like to get in touch and let us know your whakaaro as we plan for this year’s consultation.

The Health and physical education curriculum can be viewed online.  All areas of the NZ Curriculum are undergoing a refresh, however Health and physical education has not yet been updated.  It is expected that it will be by 2027.

The Education Review Office released lets talk about it: Review of relationships and sexuality education at the end of last year.  You can read the full review or a summary of findings on on the ERO website.

Fences and Gates

Mr Fencer has completed the fence work so we are now able to ensure that our little ones are safe at school and won’t be able to run out of the grounds and come to harm.  This of course relies on all of us to keep the gates closed during the school day.

Please keep our gates closed during school hours - 8.55am - 3pm.

Whānau should plan to arrive at kura with enough time to do good-bye hugs and waves and exit the grounds before the bell rings at 8.55am.  If you are running late getting to school, or the gate has closed before you leave, please make sure you close it after you've gone through.

If you are coming into the grounds before 3pm to collect your tamariki at the end of the day, please also keep the gate closed until after the 3 O’clock bell has rung.

Keep gates closed during the school day.

Vehicle restrictions

When vehicles need to come into our school grounds during the school day drivers are required to report to the school office and have a walking escort.  This ensures that tamariki are kept away from any moving vehicles.

During drop off and pick up periods, that’s the half hour before school starts and the half hour after it finishes, we only open 1 side of the vehicle gate.  This reminds drivers that tamariki are around, and not to enter.

Tennyson Street entrance

The pedestrian entrance from Tennyson street also needs to be kept closed during school hours.  This gate has a low opening from the street side, but you have to reach up high to open it from the school side.
