Junior Oral Tapestries

Victoria Rudman —

Darfield High School held their Junior Oral Tapestries in the School Library this week. It was a wonderful evening where we listened to the best of the best speakers from Years 7 - 9. Our judges for the evening, Melissa Jebson and Nikki Ferguson Brown, were impressed with the calibre of the speakers this year.

Mrs Jebson spoke to all the competitors when presenting the placings and thanked the students for the variety of topics that took the audience on different journeys from inspiring to informing. She spoke on the importance of taking your time with public speaking and pausing to hold your audience captive. I certainly agree with her that the speakers this year held their audience captive and were of a very high standard.

An enormous congratulations to the following students for their participation and placings in the oral tapestries competition:

Year 7

First Place - Brenna Rudman with her speech on ‘The changes that need to happen for Māori Education.’

Second Place - Rubie Leech, with her speech on ‘Why the school day should be shorter.’

Third Place - Eden Whelan with her speech on ‘Why the Surabaya Zoo should be shut down.’

Year 8

First Place - Sam Hardy, with his speech on ‘Animal testing.’

Second Place - Poppy Molloy, with her speech on ‘Smoking.’

Year 9

First Place - Brin Sissons with his speech on ‘Ancient Greek inventions that you cannot live without.’

Second Place - Ben Robinson with his speech on ‘Should you move to the moon?’

Third Place - Jamie Hunt with her speech on ‘The importance of the past.’

Forth Place - Imogen Smith with her speech on ‘Ancient sport vs sports today.’

Our Senior Oral Tapestries Evening is held next week on Thursday, 18 August, in E block. All are welcome to attend this event and view the top senior speakers Darfield High School has to offer.
