From the tumuaki | principal 2023 Term 2 Week 9

Andy England —

With Open Evenings and our Matariki Gala, it's been a fun week with lots to be proud of. Great to get a break from strikes but don't forget next Wednesday morning is a PPTA meeting so school is effectively closed till midday.

Kia ora koutou

This week’s Open Evenings gave a chance to reflect on all the good things about our school. I was grateful to, and proud of, the staff and students who presented us in such a positive light. We weren’t out there to sell ourselves but it is so important to be aware of all the good about Darfield High School. I was also reminded of the privilege of working in education - getting to play a part in the lives of so many amazing people, witnessing students grow and outperform us! There was strong interest from Year 6 students and parents and a few other years. It's great knowing that we have such good support from our contributing primary schools.

The Matariki Gala coincided with our second Open Evening and was a joyous celebration of student talent as well as a time to enjoy connecting with each other. Thanks to the families who came in specially for this and to the staff who made it happen. It has set the benchmark and we will make this an annual fixture.

What a relief to have a reprieve from rostering home! We are still in a precarious position with staff leave, however, but we will do all we can to provide stability next week. One thing we cannot prevent is next Wednesday’s PPTA meeting during the morning. Lessons will start with period 3 at 12 midday so please keep your children home for the morning (periods 3 and 4 will be shortened, period 5 will be normal).

Mauri ora ki a koutou (good wishes to all)

Andy England
