Canterbury University 2026 Accommodation Key Information

Careers Administrator —

As students start thinking about study options for next year, UC would like to take the opportunity to let you know about changes to the application process for accommodation in 2026.

Changes to Application Process

Preferred Hall

With an anticipated continuing high demand for first year accommodation, UC are focussing on students selecting their “preferred hall” and a second preference.  In reality very few halls consider second preferences with this preference becoming more relevant for students on the General Waitlist.

Waitlist

If applicants are not able to be offered initially, UC will automatically place the student on their General Waitlist. The General Waitlist sits with Accommodation Services and students may be offered a room by any hall at any time.

Kirkwood Avenue Hall

To meet the demand for first year catered accommodation, Kirkwood Avenue Hall will offer a 14-meal per week plan for 2026. All self-catered accommodation will only be offered at Ilam Student Accommodation. Any students looking for a close-knit community with lunch and dinner provided may find this hall an attractive option with just 64 rooms. Students are not able to select an ensuite room in their application, however Kirkwood has 10 ensuite rooms which will be prioritised for students who apply with medical needs outlined in their application form.

Māori and Pacific co-location

For any students wishing to be accommodated with Māori or Pacific students, Ilam Student Accommodation, Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi and University Hall will offer the opportunity to be co-located with other Māori or Pacific students.  This option will be offered during the room allocation process.

New Accommodation for 2026 – Tupuārangi

Tupuārangi, the new catered facility for first-year students is well underway and due for completion in 2026.

Located adjacent to Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi features 283 ensuite rooms, study spaces, and shared lounges.

These are all designed to enable the transition to independence while promoting socialisation, friendship, safety and wellbeing. Read more about Tupuārangi on the UC website.

Tupuārangi will offer a low sensory study space, kāhui social spaces and kitchenettes on each floor.

Common Confidential Reference Forms(CCRF)

The 2026 process is open now with references due on 15 September 2025.

UC halls take into careful consideration what students say about themselves in the “More About You” section.
