Tawera Rural College Agriculture Academy

Shelly Boyes —

Friday, 10 February, marks the fruition of a vision to commence the development of a centre of rural excellence based at Darfield High School when Tawera Rural College launches its agriculture academy, developed from farmer input and supported by the Primary Industry Training Organisation, three foundation high schools and the local farming community.

The two-year programme is intended for those Year 11 and 12 students who display a genuine interest and passion for agriculture specifically and the primary industries, in general. Eighteen keen foundation dual enrolled students from Haeata Community Campus, Rolleston College and Darfield High School commence their formal farming journey in Year 1 of a two-year National Certificate in Agriculture Level 2 programme, led by Lead Tutor and Head of Rural College, Rex Smith. Year 2 of the programme will be developed this year for implementation in 2024. It is expected to include a farm-based Gateway placement and on-site trade studies over two days for 32 weeks.
