Teece Museum visit

Jessica Lal —

On Tuesday this week, 13 Classics went on a trip to the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities in Central Christchurch as a part of our current internal on Ancient Art vs Modern Art and specifically focusing on the depiction of Heracles in those artworks. We first had a look at some Greek vases that date back to over 2000 years ago and the traditional black figure designs engraved into them. We then had a look at other pieces that have been made over time and showcased different art styles by different artists. We even got the chance to hold a real sterling silver coin that dates back to the time of Alexander the Great. While gathering a lot of notes for our internal, we did get the chance to have a little bit of fun by getting to create our own modernised Heracles which was a lot of fun and gave us all a laugh because we got to place Heracles into modern scenarios. Some people put him on the rugby field, in a classroom, as a gym-bro with his own podcast and other really creative scenarios. We ended the trip by grabbing an early lunch at the Riverside Market.

Thank you Ms Tregear for all the effort put into organising this trip, it was great fun and really interesting to see certain pieces that we'd only really seen behind our laptop screens, in real life. It definitely helped all of us gain a better insight into discussing our artworks for our internal. You're Sparta-cular!"
